To explore standard, harmonious color combinations.
Materials:
Drawing paper, paints and supplies, or inks, crayons, pencils, or other drawing materials, and a color wheel (see your textbook).
Method:
Even if your composition calls for a color combination that is not harmonious in order to depict visually disharmony, understanding harmonious color combinations can be key to a compositions success or failure. The use of such schemes without sensitivity to the quality and relative amounts of color used will not produce a satisfying result.
Layout a page of drawing paper with five, 4" x 5" rectangles. Within these rectangles repeat a simplified geometric design and paint each one with a different color combination. Work some neutrals (black, white, or gray) into each color combination. Use the following standard color schemes:
A) Monochromatic
B) Analogous
C) Complementary
D) Split-complementary (the use of a color and a color next to its direct complement)
